How to Maximize Health Benefits of Temulawak

Temulawak (Curcuma zanthorrhiza) is not only used to maintain vitality, it is also used to improve appetite. Not only that, temulawak can reduce LDL (Low-Density Lipoprotein) level or what we call as bad cholesterol.
To consume it, people buy temulawak extract or use traditional way: boil it. Apparently, the way we boil it should be adjusted by the purpose of usage.

“If you want to reduce LDL level, the lid should be taken when you boil it. Temulawak contains essential oil and curcuma. Curcuma can reduce cholesterol level and essential oil can improve appetite,” said dr. Arijanto Jonosewojo, SpPD, head of Policlinic of Alternative Complementer of General Hospital Dr. Soetomo, Surabaya.
“If the pan is covered with the lid, there is essential oil, the LDL level will be reduced, but your appetite will be improved as well. However, if you want to improve your appetite, cover the pan with a lid,” dr. Arijanto said when he was met by Detik at The Ritz Carlton, Mega Kuningan, South Jakarta.
As we know, curcuma zanthorrhiza can be hepatoprotector that protects liver from the side-effects of consuming cholesterol medicines in the long-term, heals hepatitis, reduces cholesterol and improves appetite.
If you want to add water after you refine the concoction and then, boil it again, dr Arijanto says that it is OK. But, he suggests that it should not be done many times. The essential oil or curcuma will be reduced and the benefits will not be optimal.
Besides that, dr Arijanto doesn’t suggest boiling temulawak using aluminum pan because the active substance in aluminum pan can react with substances in temulawak and can even cause toxication.
“It is better to use traditional way. Use clay pot or clay pan that is specially made to boil jamu or herbal,” he said.
